Here's the backstory: Some friends of mine were involved in bringing John Waters to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1988 to appear at the Lady's Literary Club Theater, a grand old place built in the 1880s. They invited me to accompany them with John Waters after the speaking engagement to a bizarre local neighborhood bar, The Anchor Inn. The place featured a metallic door with round porthole, an old oil painting of a very Rubinesque mermaid behind the bar, red leather-covered stools and booths, and very VERY low lighting from lamps whose bases featured deer hooves PLUS a somewhat decrepit cast of locals. You can imagine why he was brought there. And of course, noone in the place knew who he was. Earlier my friend grabbed a couple of John's cigarette butts from the stage, and later had his girlfriend who worked at a local frame shop create this for collection for me. It is absolutely, and personally guaranteed a genuine autograph by John Waters, and one of his smoked, & stubbed cigarette butts. Sadly, the original owner sold the Anchor Inn many years later, and it has been desecrated, in fact the ultimate desecration: It was turned into a sports bar! Tons of television sets, electronic games and the typically predictable denizens who haunt such places!! The mermaid painting is gone and so are the deer hoof lamps. Oh the humanity!
