Description
For sale and considering offers on, is a Frederick Fox original pen & ink / watercolor set design for the Admiral Broadway Revue, the precursor to Your Show of Shows. The Admiral Broadway Revue premiered at the International Theater in New York on January 28, 1949, and was simultaneously broadcast on both the NBC and DuMont networks. Max Liebman produced this big budget television variety show staring Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. Other well known entertainers on the show were: Mary McCarty, Marge and Gower Champion, and Bobby Van. The shows sponsor, Admiral, was a major manufacturer of television sets. The show ran an hour in length and only lasted seventeen weeks from January to June, 1949. Writers Mel Tolkin, Lucille Kallen, and Mel Brooks, choreographer James Starbuck, set designer Frederick Fox, and conductor Charles Sanford were all Admiral alumni. Frederick Fox (1910-1991) designed scenery and lighting for more than 200 Broadway shows and was a scene designer for television and opera as well. This scenic design measures 11 ½ inches x 7 ¼ inches and is signed by him. It is stamped and/or hand written “Designed by Frederick Fox For Kudner Agency. Scale: ¼” = 1' – 0”, Date: Jan. 15, 1949, 321 West 55th Street, New York, New York, Circle 6-7662. The design is identified in pencil as “Commercial SC.” “Sketch” “Admiral Broadway Review.” The sketch is window matted and glued to a thin board measuring 12 inches x 15 inches and has the official registration stamp of United Scenic Artists Local 829 above Fox’s signature on the back. The watercolor is in good condition and is signed on the bottom right corner Frederick Fox - ‘49. This item was purchased at a local estate sale in Helena, Montana.
